Overview

The Canada Labour Code, Part II, governs the health and safety of employees in the federal jurisdiction. This updated course provides a basic understanding of the requirements of the Code and how it is applied. It features a refreshed WHMIS section and expands on the duties of health and safety representatives, workplace health and safety committee members, and policy health and safety committee members. Case studies and other examples are included to illustrate the concepts. This course is useful for all employees who are subject to the Code and provides a starting point for those who will be taking the following e-courses:  

  • Federal Health and Safety Committees and Representatives
  • Federal Hazard Prevention Program
  • Federal Hazardous Occurrence Investigations

  • An overview of the Code  
  • The roles and responsibilities of all parties to protect employee health and safety
  • Implementing health and safety programs to protect employees  
  • Establishing health and safety committees and appointing representatives
  • Resolving health and safety complaints and work refusals under the Code
  • Investigating, recording, and reporting hazardous occurrences in the workplace

  • Identify where the Code or regulations require preventive measures, workplace inspections, and hazardous occurrence investigations.     
  • Recognize the rights and responsibilities towards preventative measures and inspections within the workplace.
  • Define the roles and responsibilities of policy and workplace committees and representatives.
  • Recognize the consequences of non-compliance and enforcement of the Code as well as any criminal liability.
