Overview

The Designated Substances Awareness (DSA) eCourse will provide an overview of the hazards when working with any of the 11 designated substances and how to complete a designated substance assessment and control program as outlined in the Designated Substances Regulation 490/09. The aim is to ensure employers are compliant with the legislation which in turn will protect workers when handling these substances, preventing occupational illness and injury. 

 

What topics will be covered?

This eCourse is comprised of 3 modules, activities and a knowledge check questions after completing each module.  


Topics include: 

  • Module 1: What is a Designated Substance?
  • Module 2: Designated Substances and Workplace Roles and Responsibilities
  • Module 3: Resources for Managing Designated Substances in the Workplace

There is also a final test when the participants have completed all 3 modules. The learner must successfully pass the test in order get a certificate of completion.

  • Define the term 'designated substance' as per the Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA) and name the 11 designated substances.
  • Name the legislation pertaining to designated substances.
  • Indicate where designated substances can be found in the workplace
  • Identify the 4 ways a worker can be exposed to a designated substance and indicate some of the possible health risks involved.
  • Describe everyone’s responsibilities with respect to designated substances in the workplace. This includes the: Employer, Supervisor, Worker, and the Joint Health and Safety Committee (JHSC).
  • Identify where to get more information, tools and resources to manage designated substances in the workplace.
