Social service workers are at an increased risk of violence and harassment due to the public nature of their work and the challenging circumstances faced by those they support. They often deal with individuals who are in distress, crisis, experiencing poor mental health or substance use disorders. Sometimes, clients have a known history of violence and harassment.
This session will address the growing threats of workplace violence and harassment, such as uncivil, disrespectful, and abusive behaviours, faced by social workers. We will discuss why these behaviours are on the rise and what employers and supervisors must do to protect workers. This approach aims not only to prevent workplace violence and harassment in social service sector, but also to create a safer environment for social workers, emphasizing the importance of a physically and psychologically safe workplace. Participants will gain a better understanding of how workplace violence and harassment can impact workers’ actions and behaviours and how making some adjustments to their approach can improve safety, morale and productivity in this sector.
